Frederick used some of their IPO money to build their new eight-million-dollar brewery which opened in February 1997, tripling their former capacity. Frederick launched their Hempen Ale in 1997. In December 1997, Frederick purchased two Maryland microbrewers, Brimstone Brewing of Baltimore and Wild Goose Brewing of Cambridge. Both breweries were closed by January 1998, and the production of their beers was moved to Frederick's brewery.

Amber-brown, moderate carbonation, thick head. Caramel malt aroma, with herbal hops. Medium body, nice hop flavor, mild bitterness. Good beer, but what's the point of the hemp seeds?
