“Ceres Bryggeriet” was established in the end of 1856 by M.C. Lottrupand became the 7th brewery in the town. The name derives from the Roman Goddess of Corn and Fertility. In 1898 Ceres merged with the breweries ”Horsens Bajersk- og Hvidtølsbryggeri” (1859), ”Bryggeriet Vejle" (1858) and "Fæstningsbryggeriet, Fredericia" to form ”Østjyske Bryggerier”. In 1956 the brewing group was renamed “Ceres Bryggerierne”, which in 1978 merged with Thor Bryggerierne to form “Jyske Bryggerier”. In 1989 “Jyske Bryggerier” merged with “Faxe Bryggeri” to form “Faxe-Jyske Bryggerier”, which in 1992 was renamed “Bryggerigruppen”. In 2000 “Albani Bryggerierne”, and with it “Maribo Bryghus”, were bought and merged with “Bryggerigruppen”. For better marketing strategies the brewing group was renamed “Royal Unibrew” as of April 2005.In February 2005 the Icelandic FL Investment Group bought 11% of Royal Unibrew.
Production has been moved to Odense and Fakse.
