FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

2010 Great Lakes Brew Fest Comes To Town: Two Days of Craft Beer, Music, and Fun on Racine’s Lakefront

RACINE, Wisconsin, August 24, 2010 – The seventh annual 2010 Great Lakes Brew Fest descends upon Racine’s Racine Festival Park this September 17th and 18th to celebrate the craft beer of Wisconsin and beyond. The festival also features several live music performances and food from local restaurants. The festival helps raise funds for the internationally acclaimed Kilties Drum & Bugle Corps.

The festival’s new expanded, two-day format will highlight 35 Wisconsin craft breweries on Friday, September 17th, and feature beer from over 90 US craft breweries on Saturday, September 18th. “We expanded because our site was maxed out and we were turning away a thousand customers,” says festival founder Curt Foreman. This year’s event is expected to draw over 6,500 craft beer lovers. Each paid attendee can sample unlimited beer and receives a souvenir tasting glass.

The festivities kick off at 6:30PM Friday on Racine’s lakefront with “On Wisconsin Brews,” an event highlighting 35 of Wisconsin’s best craft breweries. In addition to beer sampling, there will be a performance by the band Untrained Laymen. The evening concludes with a stunning fireworks display over Lake Michigan.

On Saturday from 3 to 7PM, attendees will be able to choose from over 250 beers from over 90 local, regional, and national craft breweries. Additionally, the Home Brew Island will serve the best beers from 14 area homebrew clubs. The festival also serves as the host of the Schooner Home Brew Championship, the Midwest’s largest homebrew competition. Musical entertainment includes live reggae and ska bands as well as a special performance by the Kilties Drum & Bugle Corps.

Tickets for the event are for sale by mail or online at www.greatlakesbrewfest.com. Admission is limited to 2,500 on Friday and 4,000 on Saturday and includes unlimited beer sampling with a souvenir tasting glass. Food is available for additional purchase on both days. Ticket prices per day are $39 (General Admission), $15 (Designated Driver), $85 (VIP), and $25 (VIP Designated Driver). Complimentary craft soda will be provided to designated drivers throughout the day. All attendees must be over 21.

I'm sipping on a Supergoose IPA, from Hale's Ales (Seattle, WA).  It's in a 1 pint 6 ounce bottle, so it's the correct size for a beer.  I picked it up from their new pub in Silverdale, WA.  I also picked up a Red Menace Ale, to try later.  They have 'cask conditioned' beers there, & I had the Red Menace Ale on tap cask conditioned (also available bottled).  It was really really good.  Also had the Supergoose on tap.  The 'cask conditioned' beers are served warmer than usual, with less carbonation.  I really have to try all of their beers, they have lots to try...

Anyway, this Supergoose is very good, the hops really make an appearance here.  Glad to be able to take some of their beers home.  Gotta be careful how many beers I try out, when away from home...

P.S.  The Supergoose label shows a mongoose or some critter with a red cape, not a goose...

DOVER, DE -- Kent County Tourism is pleased to announce the inaugural Delaware Wine & Beer Festival, set for Sunday, October 17 at Pizzadili Vineyard and Winery in Felton, DE, just minutes south of Dover off Route 13.  Nearly all Delaware vintners and brewers will participate including Dogfish Head Brewery, Coastal Brewing Company, Pizzadili Vineyard and Winery, Fenwick Wine Cellars, 16 Mile Brewing Company, Evolution Brewing Company, Twin Lakes Brewing Company and Stewarts Brewing Company, meaning 30+ wines and beers made in Delaware will be available for samping.

"We are very pleased to be working with the Pizzadili family on this first-ever event for Delaware," said Linda Kurtz, Director of Public Relations and Special Events for Kent County Tourism, a non-profit organization sponsoring the event.  "With the recent launch of the Delaware Wine and Ale Trail, we felt a festival to further introduce the public to Delaware's wineries and breweries will give the public a first-hand look -- and taste -- of the wines and craft beers made in Delaware."
The event will be held from 12 noon to 5 p.m.  Admission is $5 for adults and free to children 18 and younger.   Tasting packages are available for $20, which includes festival admission and five tastings.  Wine and beer glasses will also be sold for $5 each and comes with one beverage token.  Additional beverage tokens can also be purchased.  Pizzadili's will have a barbecue with food items such as hamburgers and hotdogs along with their famous pizza.  Non-alcoholic beverages will also be on sale, and snacks will be provided.

Pizzadili Winery, was started in 1993 when the first grapes were planted by brothers Tony and Pete Pizzadili.  Today the family business has grown into a full-scale vineyard and winery where 12 varieties of grapes are grown and used to make 20 wines from sweet to semi-sweet, dry, blush and fruit wines.  The facility has been a popular wedding and special event venue.

The event will be held rain or shine inside a covered pavilion. Admission tickets will only be sold at the door.  The winery is located at 1683 Peach Basket Road near Felton, DE, just minutes south of Dover.  It is 1/10th of a mile off Route 13 on the right.  For more information, call Kent County Tourism, 302-734-4888 or 800-233-5368.

Thanks to Jay Brooks for posting this press release from the American Beverage Institute. It sounds like MADD is finally starting to get what they deserve, and the release itself is so full of MADD-bashing goodness that I'll post it in its entirety here.

Mothers Against Drunk Driving Downgraded to a ‘D’ by Charity Rating Guide

Poor Fundraising Practices and Too Little Focus on Victim Services Earn MADD Low Grade

    (July 26, 2010)

WASHINGTON – The American Institute of Philanthropy’s (AIP) Charity Rating Guide & Watchdog Report has downgraded Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) to a “D” rating on a A-F scale in its August 2010 report.

“Under the leadership of CEO Chuck Hurley, MADD further diminished its focus on victim services and educating Americans about the dangers of drunk driving, instead pushing anti-drinking, anti-alcohol public policies,” said American Beverage Institute (ABI) Managing Director Sarah Longwell. “The public needs to realize that MADD isn’t the same group it was 20 years ago.”

MADD has consistently received low ratings from the Charity Rating Guide due to its poor fundraising and spending practices.

According to the AIP, it should cost most charities $35 or less to raise $100. In some years, MADD has spent nearly double that amount. The AIP also says most highly efficient charities are able to spend 75 percent or more of total expenses on charitable programs. In some years, MADD has spent as little as 57 percent on programs. In 2008, MADD spent almost $30 million on salaries and fundraising, leaving just 1/3 of its budget available for charitable work and victim services.

Another charitable giving guide, Charity Navigator, gives MADD an overall rating of 1 out of 4 stars. Charity Navigator reserves this embarrassing basement-level for a charity that “fails to meet industry standards.”

During Hurley’s tenure at MADD, the organization’s revenue declined while Hurley and other officers and directors saw their salaries increase - a whopping 56 percent. In contrast, MADD’s revenue declined nearly one-quarter over the same period. And MADD’s spending on community programs—what a charity should be about—dropped by 17 percent. In 2009, MADD had to lay off 50 employees nationwide—15 percent of its workforce—a move that cut much of the organization’s victim advocacy work.

These financial changes reveal a shift in MADD’s mission. In the words of its own founder Candy Lightner: MADD “has become far more neo-prohibitionist than I had ever wanted or envisioned … I didn't start MADD to deal with alcohol. I started MADD to deal with the issue of drunk driving.”

Longwell continued: “MADD’s anti-alcohol agenda includes advocating for alcohol detectors in all cars, sobriety checkpoints and sky-high alcohol taxes. By spending on these new priorities, MADD has diverted money from programs created to help the victims of drunk driving and get dangerous drunk drivers off the roads.”

Yeah, three votes. (And one of them was mine.)

I did find some auto-spam-killing software, and it has cut down the number of scum from about twenty to two or three that I have to deal with every morning. So we'll see how it goes from here.

Warsteiner Oktoberfest: not a bad beer, but nothing like the Bavarian examples. Then again, the Bavarian examples have been getting lighter over recent years, and they're not much different from Helles beers now.

I haven't had a chance to try Silver City's beers yet, but I've heard good things about them.

have fun

Three votes?HuhHuhHuhHuhHuhHuhHuhHuhHuhHuhHuhHuhHuhHuhHuhHuh?

Well, that doesn't stop me.............I still like good beer................

I tried a couple new ones:

Warsteiner Oktoberfest--- Kinda disappointed, tasted more like most lagers, but still good.

Silver City "Whoop Pass" double IPA,  this is a nice ale.  been trying different IPA's lately, and this one has a nice hop taste.  Not a really over-powering of hops, so most people will like it.  Says they use over 50 lbs Cascade & Columbus hops per 15 barrel batch.  That sounds like a lot.  Can't go wrong with that!!
