Red-amber, slight haze, dense head. Fruity estery aroma on a caramel toasty malt background. Light creamy body, hugely malty with complex toasty and wood characters. Lots of Kent Golding hop flavor and a moderate-to-big bitterenss. Alcohol is obvious but not obtrusive.
    • Date: September 25, 2001 (#3902)
      Package: bottled
Place: Flanagan's Stop and Shop, Appleton WI
      Score: 14 points
      Overall Impression (2½)
Brown, opaque with yeast, big thick head - looks like a yeasty high kräusen rising out of the bottle. Estery, malty, yeasty aroma. Very fizzy, malty, rich, full-bodied. Mildly warming. Mildly bitter fizzy finish. Aside from being grossly overconditioned, this bottle had obviously been mishandled somewhere along the way.

  • Barley Wine-Style Ale
    10.00% abv.
    • Date: February 24, 2002 (#4228)
      Package: real ale
      Place: TrimB's Restaurant, Appleton WI
      Score: 14 points
      Overall Impression (2½)
Pale amber, still, small head with large bubbles. Alcoholic aroma with mild floral hops. Big-yet-thin body, hugely alcoholic. Some malt sweetness in the middle, warming alcoholic finish. Disappointing lack of complexity. Served via gravity-dispense from the cask.
