Brilliant. Absolutely brilliant. Chico's out in the middle of nowhere, but if you don't make the day trip from the San Francisco Bay area out to Sierra Nevada, you lose. Outstanding beers in the bottle...just wait until you have them brewery-fresh! Be advised they're closed Mondays; fortunately, I stopped by on a Sunday morning during my Beer Odyssey.

Directions: Highway 99 into Chico. (If you're on I-5, use Highway 32 to cut over to Highway 99, then head south.) Exit at 20th Street, go west. Sierra Nevada is a couple of blocks along on the left.

Red. Clear. Flat-looking. Standard Sierra Nevada hop aroma. Fruity, some alcohol. Very fruity. Needs more malt aroma? Fairly alcoholic taste, but not offensive. Long-lasting bitter finish. Fruity start and middle. Almost benign, but actually very pleasant. Strong beer with great flavors. Aroma mixes well with taste.

Red-brown, clear, not much carbonation, but it throws a big head. BLAST of hop aroma, malt, and alcohol. There's nothing subtle about this beer. Big body, big hop flavor, big bitterness, big alcohol taste and sensation...and all of it balanced more delicately than a dime standing on edge.

Looks beautiful, smells great. Characteristic "Sierra" hops. Good carbonation, big mouthfeel, but malt doesn't stand up to the hops. It's a little Bigfoot. My personal preference for malt over hops is the only reason this beer didn't score 20 points. Outstanding.

Very dark red. Very clear...not opaque at all. Actually, I think it should be darker. Typical Sierra Nevada flowery hop aroma. Some roasty notes. Again, could smell darker. Good thick body...creamy, even. Roasty, then a carbonation bite, then roasty-fading. Carbonation is fairly high. I like it, but it's not very big. 14.5?!? I'm biased toward DARK BLACK HEAVY BURNT Porters (like Anchor or even the old Devil's Brew), so that probably hurt the score. I like this a LOT, but in my opinion, it's a bit out-of-style. (The taste alone rates a 20!)
